After working for many years in Germany, Kostas returns to his home village in Greece. But his family seems to have forgotten him and his wife is in a new relationship. Together with her lover, she then murders her spouse. Yet Angelopoulos is less interested in this crime than in revealing the stance of the Greeks, making the true theme of the film the isolation of the village, which resists any sort of external influence. Shot during the era of the Greek military dictatorship, the film was subject to an export ban. A print was sent to Berlin for the 1st International Forum of New Cinema in 1971 via the Goethe-Institut.
